In the basic template of horror movies every single character gets involved in the cycle of fear & deaths that ensues in the wake of a ghost appearing. In real life that is never so. While someone in a family or group may be experiencing the supernatural, others won’t have any idea what she or he is talking about, dismissing the experiences of the ‘victim’ till the very end. Most won’t even get to know that anything happened, just in their midst, even afterwards. That is what Farhan (his character) does in the film. “I represent normal world that co-exists with the supernatural one.” says Faizal Khan about his role in Ofiice #thebrightesthorrorfilm.
So how did he play the normal in the midst of the high strung? “Well, had the other characters been screaming and shouting and running around, it would have been easy for me to draw a graph distinct from them. But since the film is a realistic take on the horror genre, the other actors too were speaking normally in most scenes. In such a scenario I had to develop a really casual, matter of fact way of delivering the dialogues. I created a character that would not be over expressive in a situation where ghosts are mentioned, or if a police officer is investigating and – consequently – even when he tries to seduce a woman. Farhan is never over-the-top.
Alumni of the Barry John Acting Studio, Faizal’s training under the theatre maestro came in handy in creating the almost flat character and yet not lose impact. “It was very easy for this character to get lost amidst all the chaos as he simply never reacts. Its only the understated clarity and nonchalance that make him stand out” offers the actor.
