Two of the most sensational news that have broken out in past couple of days are one about Aamir walking out of Salute, an ambitious biopic of astronaut Rakesh Sharma and the second about Aamir stopping all outside films for the next ten years and only focusing on multiple instalments of a franchise that his own production house is currently developing. If the latter is true, this is going to change the business of Bollywood in a lot of ways. Also there are all kinds of speculations about the reason for the walk-out. In fact the grapevine suggests that now Shah Rukh Khan has been approached for the same project.
As far as the strategy of working on just one franchise is concerned, no actor in Bollywood has ever tried something like this, especially at a stage when he is going through the best phase of his career. Since 2006, Aamir has had 8 Hit films in 10 years, which is double of what he had in the first 18 years of his career. At this stage, rejecting all films from the outside banners and focusing on just one franchise makes it a big gamble. If the first instalment is a huge success, the gamble would pay off. But if it underperforms, then there will be nothing for Aamir to fall back upon – except the next instalment of the same franchise. On top of that, Aamir is known to work at his leisurely pace and that means the distance between his hits would become too wide. Considering Aamir is already 52 years old, that also leaves very little time for him to utilize as a conventional lead actor.
Let’s see how this pans out for Mr Perfectionist.
