Hollywood filmmakers’ misplaced love for all things Mafia continues to plague it, with help from Mob characters obsessed leading men in no small measure. This despite the fact that most such films have bitten the dust at the box office in the recent times. Now it’s Leonardo Dicaprio’s turn to try his hand at another gangsta flick ‘The Black Hand’, having already done crime capers like The Departed and The Gangs Of New York. Dicaprio has had better luck with both his mafia movies when compared to Johnny Depp in the disastrous Black Mass, Tom Hardy’s lukewarm Legend and Ben Affleck’s nightmarish Live By Night.
Leo will play Joe Petrosino popularly known as the “Italian Sherlock Holmes” a NYPD cop on the trails of underworld in the early 20th century. Both the theme and the era have been seen on screen on many an occasion starting perhaps with 1987’s The Untouchables or even earlier. Will Leo with his legendary talent be able to add a new dimension to the tried and tested material or will it be one more run of the mill underworld drama, there is still plenty of time and a few shootouts left to know that.
