A new poster of Akshay Kumar’s Republic Day release Padman has come out. The poster has a clean shaven Akshay Kumar, clad in a vest, playing with cotton against the backdrop of a manufacturing unit or factory. Since the film is based on Akshay’s wife, Twinkle Khanna’s book The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad, its only apt that we see Akshay against the backdrop of what seem to be a manufacturing unit for sanitary napkins.
Twinkle’s book was based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham who revolutionized the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine. However this poster seems a bit different from the first one in the sense that instead of a shabbily dressed man riding a bicycle, Akshay is seen here in a much more groomed avatar.
The film Padman was first reported to be clashing with 2.0 Starring Rajnikant in the sequel of his 2010 hit Robot with Akshay playing the villain Crowman and Siddhartha Malhotra starrer Aiyaari with Akshay’s regular director Neeraj Pandey. Aiyaari was soon shifted to a February date. Later Robot shifted it’s release date to April and it looked like Padman will have a solo release. However with the controversy around Padmavati and the delay in censor of the film leading to it being postponed from 1st December, now it is being speculated that Padmavati will release on Republic Day making a clash with Padman quite possibe.
Akshay has had a field day with semi realistic socially relevant dramas in the last 4 years. Though it started slow with films like special 26 and Baby, it picked up steam with Airlift last year crossing 130 cr, Rustom 120 cr, Jolly LLB 2 105 and Toilet Ek Prem Katha again 130 cr.
Padman seems to be in the same safe zone and without clash it would have been a cakewalk for Akshay with this one. With clash however, this space has become much more interesting to watch.
