This, if true, is real bad news. It seems that the studio backing Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati starring Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-Shahid Kapoor is toying with the idea of shelving the film. Apparently not only is the studio hesitant because of the recent attacks on the film’s director Bhansali and burning down of it’s sets by protesters but their bigger fear is further attacks on the film and possible threat to property and lives of crew members apart from protests and boycott calls around the release of the film.
Padmavati tells the fictional tale of Aallauddin Khilji’s obsession with Rajput queen Padmavati. Somehow the word got around that the film maker plans to show romantic and lovemaking scenes between the two characters and even a kiss. A political organization attacked the director of the film in Rajasthan followed by another attack burning down it’s sets in Mahrashtra where a large number of costumes and props were gutted in the fire.
Not only is the cost of re-creating those costumes and props huge, it will also take a lot of time. This may lead to a delay in the release of the film, adding to interest costs of the film’s budget which then may face boycott calls and may be even violent protests upon it’s release making it extremely risky for the studio to continue to invest in the film. On top of that reportedly the studio is already going through a cash crunch as it had a few flops in recent times and also because it has invested a lot in creating libraries of content for it’s digital initiatives.
If the film is shelved not only the director’s creative dream would be shattered but even the actors will suffer major setbacks as all three of them have allotted bulk dates for the film, already having created huge gaps in their releases before and after Padmavati.
Hope the studio gathers courage to take the project to it’s conclusion.
