Salman Khan’s latest Eid offering, Tubelight, has taken a low opening at the boxoffice. Though the collections at 21 cr nett are the second highest of the year after Bahubali 2 – The Conclusion, the difference is a huge 20 cr between the two films. Also it just about manages to beat Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees by a few Lakhs. The film had the disadvantage of a clash with Kaabil but the advantage was a Republic Day national holiday.
It would be more prudent to compare Tubelight to Salman’s own pre Eid releases. Kick in 2014 on a pre Eid Friday with almost similar composition of the week (Eid falling on Monday or Tuesday) had done 25 cr and Bajrangi bhaijaan had done 27 Cr. This despite the fact that Bajrangi Bhaijaan had Eid the very next day which helps the late evening show collections. So kick is the most apt comparison for Tubelight and the latter has fallen short by 20%. However Kick was an action film which always open at higher levels. So it shows that pre Eid is bound to have its effect, whatever the placement of holidays and the genre of the film.
Yet Tubelight ticket rates are higher than Kick and even Bajrangi Bhaijaan and that shows the collections are clearly disappointing. What’s worse, the word-of-mouth for the film seems to be average to negative and this may further dent the collections quite a lot even before the time to reap benefits of the Eid holiday sets in.
Now it’s the Saturday collections that will show where the film is headed. With collections above 25 cr, even a flat Saturday would have been okay but with a 20 cr day one the film must grow on Saturday to get decent weekend numbers and a respectable verdict later on.
